This will be the 3rd time we've decorated it. First it was yellow and pink and green, then salmon and gray (my choice), and finally I decided to let go of the control (a bit!) and let her pick out what she wanted, which is actually more BLUE! So one Sunday I started ripping her old room apart while cleaning it, and so began a 3 month long makeover! The longest part was because Pottery Barn messed up my monogram order and then didn't ship it out until I called 4 different times! Better late than never!<br />
<br />
Here's a one side of the room<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">BEFORE:</span><br />

Thought I'd share my last year porch decor and get excited about new things for this season. Nothing says "Welcome" like a pretty porch! (and some trick or treaters:-))<br />

We had just moved in, and plopped down our old stand alone TV, Ikea shelves for kids toys and threw up a Christmas tree. I wasn't a fan of the previous owners green paint colors, but lived with them for much too long. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNU0HDvgO4RBvLPrtjuAzFhE0jgMcWNtdgORMF6NUsnW__1jkBTcL5V6hTanKJOOde9LY84lC-FazUZ9zK1VUI9coVxZJ4Kyl2Ya3OiVsmMDbbURqtuWgGd8fHa0lKVYu8pOrq9AGOzuC0/s1600/Family+Room+A+Before+txt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNU0HDvgO4RBvLPrtjuAzFhE0jgMcWNtdgORMF6NUsnW__1jkBTcL5V6hTanKJOOde9LY84lC-FazUZ9zK1VUI9coVxZJ4Kyl2Ya3OiVsmMDbbURqtuWgGd8fHa0lKVYu8pOrq9AGOzuC0/s640/Family+Room+A+Before+txt.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It took me FOR-EV-ER (insert Sandlot kid here:-)) to decide what to do with this space.... and it wasn't until after I redid my front room in Navy and bright pink (and my husband was ok with it--phew) that I felt confident I could pull off some pink in the family room as well:-)<br />
<br />

Sometimes when its hard to pick a color scheme, the fall back is really quite obvious---- choose your favorite colors!!! You already know you love them. The key to not making this room look dark or dreary or cray cray, is by using the colors in small doses and having correct scale patterns. I can't believe it took me so long to fix up this room, since it's the one we're in 99% percent of the time.<br />
<br />
I have to include this next pic so you can see my Ikea curtains that I stenciled in coral. I looked everywhere for fabric but couldn't find the look I was going for so I made my own:-) And it's not a great picture but the kitchen light fixture also got replaced (overstock), and it looks 10x better in person!<br />
<br />

<br />
More things to still tweak/update:<br />
<br />
New side tables by sofa and chair.<br />
Throw away love seat and get new chaise or spindle chair.<br />
Get Rug & new carpet.<br />
Address right side of fireplace.<br />
Floor lamp by chair.<br />
Address TV wall (yes I'm a fru-gal, no cable just bunny ears;)<br />
<br />
Kitchen still needs major updating but I'm not dwelling on it.<br />
<br />
I'm working on my master bathroom decorating as soon as I finish the new roman shade I re-did in my kitchen. So glad kids are back to school so I have un-interrupted time to work on my projects!<br />
<br />
Happy decorating!<br />

Complete with a new bigger rug I got from <a href="http://www.rugsusa.com/" target="_blank">Rugs USA</a> during their black Friday sale. It said light blue in the description online, but it's definitely more of a seafoam in person. Good thing it looks great that color anyway!</div>

Man, these stairs were the trickiest!! So many angles. Not just the board and battens, but then the tiny trim pieces inside the box were at such weird angles! I saw a great tutorial on youtube, where the guy cut tape, put them in his angle, then folded it in half where the pieces would meet, then lined his tape up out on his saw blade, and cut the perfect angle every time. </div>

I love how it turned out, I feel like it's really taking this house up a notch. Now if I could just get new carpet and paint/stain the banister, and paint the super tall walls-- but I'm too tired!!</div>

I've had this project in my head for ages. I knew it would take a long time and so when my hubby had a long trip for work I knew it was just the time to get started. I wanted to have it all up and done before he got home. Well, I may have underestimated the time it was going to take to complete this project- ha! </div>
<br class="Apple-interchange-newline" />
<span style="text-align: center;">(Most of these pics were taken with my iphone. No time to get out the big camera in the midst of this project.)</span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 1: </span> Order the mdf online at the Home Depot, I love being able to pick it up at the front rather than going to and hauling each piece onto the cart myself. I used 1x6's for the baseboards and 1x3's for the stiles. I also got some 1x1 trim pieces for the inside of the boxes. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 2: </span>Paint all the primed mdf in the garage.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 4: </span>Get all 3 kids off to school finally and gather all essential tools:-)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 6:</span> Use your chisel, putty knife and hammer to carefully take off the existing baseboard, I put this back on at the end to layer on top of the new 1x6 taller baseboards. Love this look!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 6 1/2: </span> Measure and cut your chair rail and base. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
While I usually describe myself as a delicate flower and am NOT a feminist, I love being able to build things myself. There's always a learning curve on each project, and after a few past projects I feel pretty confident with a miter saw. During this project I finally figured out my air compressor and nail gun. Don't have to ask the hubby for help anymore:-)</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Someone took all the ear and eye protection with him on a trip, (including my Women on Target ears I just got!), so I was forced to improvise for safety gear. Enter my blingy sunglasses, and I found some of my hub's racing headbands to help dull the noisy saw. Don't forget to pull your hair back too, you don't want that getting stuck in your tools or in the way!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiswM_DN_WR6dhfrxvrCHoCSNoco1pIUXMwA9zaebGPknQLyZqdl-bA8F9TT_KpCAjVT4VIrRNI5_DL5gJ82X2ZRZoF6aKrLGoxqX0gNZveNlOl3ZChkfW-jI2-l06QyFfPYoKiWdCYoAjU/s1600/Using+my+miter+saw+for+entry+way+wainscoting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiswM_DN_WR6dhfrxvrCHoCSNoco1pIUXMwA9zaebGPknQLyZqdl-bA8F9TT_KpCAjVT4VIrRNI5_DL5gJ82X2ZRZoF6aKrLGoxqX0gNZveNlOl3ZChkfW-jI2-l06QyFfPYoKiWdCYoAjU/s1600/Using+my+miter+saw+for+entry+way+wainscoting.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 7: </span> Using your Level, make a line and tack the new chair rail in place, mitering the corners. Also the baseboard. Then measure and add the stiles with your nailer. Don't forget to use your glue too!<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 8: </span><span style="color: #990000; font-size: large;">DESIGN TIP! </span> Make sure there are always stiles at both ends of the wall! You don't want a 3 sided box up against your door frame, there needs to be 4 sides of molding and then your door frame, or it will look unfinished. Same with the corners, make sure there is a stile at the corners. Don't let the wall corner hang out by itself.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm loving our new hand scraped hardwood floors we got last year... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I really should have covered them up with some brown paper stuff to avoid getting sawdust in the cracks. It was a real pain to get out. I put my air compressor on a piece of cardboard so I didn't scratch the floors.</div>

Out with the red, in with the pink and blue. Too bad I don't have a shot of my old red curtains, so glad I finally changed them. I've lived with them for so long, I brought them from my last house! I only have Christmas photos, so please bear with me:) <div>
<br /><div style="text-align: center;">
Here's the before:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And the After!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid1cdjpvlNobEH7keLSdObKi2okvFD0F36hr0A8Gjs7G8GF9fXMtPAUs_OgHebfyY8mYK6iFuQkvbBN8nmDFkYIPG-NSZQMqoidLfViydaWiGKC14g0-YLh-32tVX9QzJBQBQLYksMk5hN/s1600/Christmas+Living+Room+Pink+and+Blue+House+of+Chic+and+Penoche.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid1cdjpvlNobEH7keLSdObKi2okvFD0F36hr0A8Gjs7G8GF9fXMtPAUs_OgHebfyY8mYK6iFuQkvbBN8nmDFkYIPG-NSZQMqoidLfViydaWiGKC14g0-YLh-32tVX9QzJBQBQLYksMk5hN/s1600/Christmas+Living+Room+Pink+and+Blue+House+of+Chic+and+Penoche.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /><div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm still looking for a rug, a tea trolley, new carpet, new lamp on the left. I'd love to get new sofas, as these were hand me down from my husband's secretary a long time ago. Maybe someday I'll get new ones but not anytime soon... At least they are neutral and the most comfortable sofas in the house. </div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I made the white and pink pillows out of napkins I got on vacation, the pink upholstered tables are from Target, as well as the pink polkadot and chrysanthemum pillow. Blue pillow was a cover I bought at hobby lobby. I bought the curtain fabric at fabric.com and simply hemmed the edges and up they went. The blue pillow on the love seat was a shirt I got at Old Navy, didn't fit so hot so I made it into a pillow.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There you have it, my living room in constant progress!</div>

It's huge, so I thought it would make the perfect chalkboard. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCnTAVv3l85cgsl9I5yNo0c49p92oPeJPM5ca-AjqK_apbEVZyjkuGmhn_u6LKeOK0JwIiAOpERTTN9PhmRuhw3C6QNiMfAEOpWHQ5cq-1XGTeOEbjvMDdiGyUZZa5KFTYB4pFSvJvokyt/s1600/IMG_7142.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCnTAVv3l85cgsl9I5yNo0c49p92oPeJPM5ca-AjqK_apbEVZyjkuGmhn_u6LKeOK0JwIiAOpERTTN9PhmRuhw3C6QNiMfAEOpWHQ5cq-1XGTeOEbjvMDdiGyUZZa5KFTYB4pFSvJvokyt/s1600/IMG_7142.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Enter a few coats of chalkboard paint, and it made the perfect centerpiece for my Christmas mantel. I liked this chalkboard art I had seen before, and it was easy to recreate with chalk and a wet paper towel to erase. <br />

I hung mine on my kitchen window over my sink, so I can enjoy it while I'm doing such a mundane task. I didn't preserve my branches (that step takes a few weeks of soaking them in a solution so they won't lose their color) but mine has been up for over a month and still looks beautiful and green!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1zpM8NCtnOlB6alOQRIOnDIteIK6Jn1iKBcy-yHNwSPmTr6oRu0fOqU_OkDPc-HbGVxcwjjoeGflhNcpC7U9Mj7wyuWTURN7Uc197HD1_vCe0xzxCtVm9Ke-Mo3c6Tp-6SiH2zufU9nOz/s1600/IMG_7233.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1zpM8NCtnOlB6alOQRIOnDIteIK6Jn1iKBcy-yHNwSPmTr6oRu0fOqU_OkDPc-HbGVxcwjjoeGflhNcpC7U9Mj7wyuWTURN7Uc197HD1_vCe0xzxCtVm9Ke-Mo3c6Tp-6SiH2zufU9nOz/s1600/IMG_7233.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This project took about an hour, from cutting my branches outside in my yard, to tying them around my wire wreath form. Couldn't be easier. Then I hung it on my inside window with a clear command hook.<br />
<br />

I was actually super sick when I made this, I had that nasty flu, but was desperate to get ready for a Christmas Party coming up at my house. So I decided to push it for an hour, and then couldn't fool myself any longer and spent the rest of the weekend on the sofa! Thank goodness for Tamiflu--- finally!<br />

So of course I made a wreath! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihcf38wyTZ__k3a0faY2YOvwUMbBQ4olEUHEHqDxY5qsk18OMN2VqAC_nnC-IcfGHgxqRLIqyAGZxWNvRtS-gjM7m-ajtuT4isEK2lRQod9d9Qif7PtYjZqS-rtyUQoSN5gklBieh9zCZz/s1600/HCP+CO5in.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihcf38wyTZ__k3a0faY2YOvwUMbBQ4olEUHEHqDxY5qsk18OMN2VqAC_nnC-IcfGHgxqRLIqyAGZxWNvRtS-gjM7m-ajtuT4isEK2lRQod9d9Qif7PtYjZqS-rtyUQoSN5gklBieh9zCZz/s1600/HCP+CO5in.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
I got all my supplies at Hobby Lobby:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
2 Packs of sheet moss ($7 each)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
green floral wire ($3)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
hay wreath form ($5)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Burlap with nailhead trim Letter T (in the wall decor section) ($10, half off $20 sale that week)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Burlap Ribbon ($??)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
4 Gingham Drawer Pulls ($3 each = $12)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Large Door hook (to hang wreath with) ($5?) (I couldn't remember what color their door was, I think I'll swap out the black hook for a clear one when I find one.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
I started by cutting the moss in a shape to cover the wreath, then I just used the pieces of floral wire to wrap around the wreath.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
FRONT:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs6OdyOuk7XFeKIJOC4Bnqrs-ehc0YQ50Pa1MFJTInKQAurJK-XD6SBllsGhaNXzT-9Obj1bFhlJjset57QdRPfDQUC3cpdUpU3NxDildydLfzJfN7Cp3RKb_EAjfdDiCL4F8dk0oPXYW-/s1600/HCP+CO1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs6OdyOuk7XFeKIJOC4Bnqrs-ehc0YQ50Pa1MFJTInKQAurJK-XD6SBllsGhaNXzT-9Obj1bFhlJjset57QdRPfDQUC3cpdUpU3NxDildydLfzJfN7Cp3RKb_EAjfdDiCL4F8dk0oPXYW-/s1600/HCP+CO1.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
BACK:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXMrstzJCSCiwuG1ef-5deZcFhluqrUIg9k_5jLgsJG5IZJpC_ZuetL5q5aCdfMcf9jwsGSYctDV6vUorNx2AVu7p4kuphbhIkHb2Kjdqrgo0hiDi-NKHtz2r_0KuAzTWF2i2xQW6McGzf/s1600/HCP+CO2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXMrstzJCSCiwuG1ef-5deZcFhluqrUIg9k_5jLgsJG5IZJpC_ZuetL5q5aCdfMcf9jwsGSYctDV6vUorNx2AVu7p4kuphbhIkHb2Kjdqrgo0hiDi-NKHtz2r_0KuAzTWF2i2xQW6McGzf/s1600/HCP+CO2.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Then I made the bow, just like a hair bow, fold your ribbon like a fan and pinch the middle, then tie the middle with floral wire to hold it tight. (Crazy summer hair! wtheck?:-) <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin3IU64zTfsvERMQ1U7352r8O3C7RgVlez9ywz9RUOsRS1t41dhXCbu6IryYRrd7JF_yAprWgZIoltaVGi5kiP8wH8CcWdmpliPenI7JHbfPw8Vq8C7U2e9BmNuOaVJXAaDqYlrzs83bcF/s1600/HCP+CO3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin3IU64zTfsvERMQ1U7352r8O3C7RgVlez9ywz9RUOsRS1t41dhXCbu6IryYRrd7JF_yAprWgZIoltaVGi5kiP8wH8CcWdmpliPenI7JHbfPw8Vq8C7U2e9BmNuOaVJXAaDqYlrzs83bcF/s1600/HCP+CO3.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdOuMBDhP8GQwwBkMtAnaXyHcXFWRe4JX9rmLSisdPDcUcGL2_CLofIpCi6l6VMUUk8EbrWIlyOzja6vE5CV9v-YtuV274R3OVYaPAJMtO5_U8_mY5-A9REXgbtFsvAVy4ebDQiyKW5Uk1/s1600/HCP+CO4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdOuMBDhP8GQwwBkMtAnaXyHcXFWRe4JX9rmLSisdPDcUcGL2_CLofIpCi6l6VMUUk8EbrWIlyOzja6vE5CV9v-YtuV274R3OVYaPAJMtO5_U8_mY5-A9REXgbtFsvAVy4ebDQiyKW5Uk1/s1600/HCP+CO4.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a><br />
<br />
The bow needed something in the middle, and that's where I ran to the car and grabbed the drawer pulls I was going to return from another project, and tied floral wire around the drawer pull base, and the wire was long enough to tie around the bow also. (Sorry should have taken a side view of this part.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_tAXHTI9hUaGH7ple91LIoTuCRfkdqjmYooRmf2lSjeUbstLwfKwxdURYW3g5VMNoiqD-P-MGga1zdY-Ywk4r2nJNyG4-zTIJQrLYEgL3z9oTKgkS4Iw7jVI9I-mZu-aWy01YVOq6StIT/s1600/HCP+CO5d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_tAXHTI9hUaGH7ple91LIoTuCRfkdqjmYooRmf2lSjeUbstLwfKwxdURYW3g5VMNoiqD-P-MGga1zdY-Ywk4r2nJNyG4-zTIJQrLYEgL3z9oTKgkS4Iw7jVI9I-mZu-aWy01YVOq6StIT/s1600/HCP+CO5d.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I attached the pulls on the greenery the same way, and Voila! To attach the "T" I hot glued the T where it would touch the wreath, luckily it was a snug fit and it slid in, hopefully the glue will hope secure it...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you look closely, the green floral wire does show on the front, but it's exactly the same color so it blends in really well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihcf38wyTZ__k3a0faY2YOvwUMbBQ4olEUHEHqDxY5qsk18OMN2VqAC_nnC-IcfGHgxqRLIqyAGZxWNvRtS-gjM7m-ajtuT4isEK2lRQod9d9Qif7PtYjZqS-rtyUQoSN5gklBieh9zCZz/s1600/HCP+CO5in.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihcf38wyTZ__k3a0faY2YOvwUMbBQ4olEUHEHqDxY5qsk18OMN2VqAC_nnC-IcfGHgxqRLIqyAGZxWNvRtS-gjM7m-ajtuT4isEK2lRQod9d9Qif7PtYjZqS-rtyUQoSN5gklBieh9zCZz/s1600/HCP+CO5in.jpg" /></a><br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I tried to make it as neutral as possible, so it could be a year round wreath, it would even look great at Christmas time don't you think? </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Happy Decorating! </div>

I've always wanted to do trees in the kids' rooms, but the frugal gal in me always put it off, thinking of using that money for something I could use year round instead. Hosting the Relief Society Kringle Mingle this year finally gave me the excuse I needed. </div>

I am still in the process of redecorating Leah's room, but the main colors are Gray and Coral. I sewed all the bedding, and don't underestimate those snowflakes. There are around 30 of those suckers, and I'm not kidding when I say it took me over 6 hours (during General Conference) to put those things together, not to mention sore hands from cutting out the shapes (Maybe I should work out?:-)).</div>

I also stuffed some Christmas socks with batting and hung them up on the window frame, reminds me of the Who's in Whoville. Should have found some coral and white striped socks but I was in a bit of a rush to get it done, so these ones worked for now.</div>

Missing the coral theme, but I found these great damask napkins at TJMaxx, and decided to make them into a Merry Christmas Banner. I just printed off the letters on cardstock and taped them to the napkins. Then taped the napkins to a long piece of yarn, and tied some tulle between each one.</div>

Today's Christmas Room is my modern eclectic guest/craft room.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVrTXtg3pvhOVL8PXgy1cQ91HoH76N_vMxS01SpTy-LW0c71wvUFpcZkCz3Jv8wSuJItlBZ__HJ60JHaOdQH7RzxEO6Z3zp7GrHkGck0SAyxvvXNXkovKRmOuaGRYooRapWLl854D2XGXJ/s1600/_DSC0141d+wm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="418" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVrTXtg3pvhOVL8PXgy1cQ91HoH76N_vMxS01SpTy-LW0c71wvUFpcZkCz3Jv8wSuJItlBZ__HJ60JHaOdQH7RzxEO6Z3zp7GrHkGck0SAyxvvXNXkovKRmOuaGRYooRapWLl854D2XGXJ/s640/_DSC0141d+wm.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I spray painted some branches with white paint (but only to make them light gray,) and hung my pink and blue ornaments on, and placed spools of thread on the big thorns. This is my craft room after all:-)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNIcY_0vbdHc2R8Me1wKhyphenhyphenjJmU6kN0i5d0Eiq-scLYP_koJoxei-zKrhk0ze9vELXbGgQaxkQwBLWKGhfAYz9TLgf3Xca_21fHErMd32A1lkGXQgjYMXo6z6pHtSbsTRZY7v-IXusg0Xm6/s1600/_DSC0148d+wm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNIcY_0vbdHc2R8Me1wKhyphenhyphenjJmU6kN0i5d0Eiq-scLYP_koJoxei-zKrhk0ze9vELXbGgQaxkQwBLWKGhfAYz9TLgf3Xca_21fHErMd32A1lkGXQgjYMXo6z6pHtSbsTRZY7v-IXusg0Xm6/s640/_DSC0148d+wm.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I hung Christmas ornaments with ribbon from the window moldings (yes, someday those blinds will be made into Roman shades like my dining room), and topped it with a feather boa I got at House of Bachelorette-- (best prices on boas-- not paid to say this:-)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXj6sgzc8XIihzNz-kMvQMCTsBvl9K_kWkJzjJ8J_tdu3-d-iNwMj3P4UWqUh15JM6SniORt8PGUhrTom34nIIAbmK22iGq5Q8_Ge8RX3WdN-CMx63jKJ59AuA59-3PbqEm1AGDg8fr9XD/s1600/_DSC0151d+wm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXj6sgzc8XIihzNz-kMvQMCTsBvl9K_kWkJzjJ8J_tdu3-d-iNwMj3P4UWqUh15JM6SniORt8PGUhrTom34nIIAbmK22iGq5Q8_Ge8RX3WdN-CMx63jKJ59AuA59-3PbqEm1AGDg8fr9XD/s640/_DSC0151d+wm.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Luckily, I have this marabou feather wreath up year round anyway, so that looked festive enough all by itself. And that lovely one of a kind painting- by Yours Truly at my first Paint Jam session while I was in Hong Kong this summer. The secretary I got for free and it was in a bad 80s kind of way, and I painted it black a few years ago and added new hardware, I still love it. Great for fabric/craft storage.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbf-MkW3Kdnj-_WqXocJKDF2pC4wA15_8gM5ezaefIJPMRMbFhMwoKGUvnIQqebsqPFZBNTwonZsTcXB0PZXRvTZSuEWzffpTcJ3GhgyrzEH8H3zksQHILWs1xW-8R78ILfgMsaQM5wutf/s1600/_DSC0296d+wm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbf-MkW3Kdnj-_WqXocJKDF2pC4wA15_8gM5ezaefIJPMRMbFhMwoKGUvnIQqebsqPFZBNTwonZsTcXB0PZXRvTZSuEWzffpTcJ3GhgyrzEH8H3zksQHILWs1xW-8R78ILfgMsaQM5wutf/s640/_DSC0296d+wm.jpg" width="321" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And since I haven't found the perfect neo-classical mirror for over the bed yet, I decided to make some paper fan flowers, then cut out some ornament shapes for the center from sticky glittery foam paper, and then cut out the snowflake shapes and stuck them to the wall.</div>
<br />

In October the ladies in my <a href="http://mormon.org/" target="_blank">Relief Society (church women's organization</a>) asked me if I would be one of the hostesses for our Christmas Activity, the Kringle Mingle. I was so excited to have a Home Tour and really decorate my house up for Christmas. I'll be adding more rooms each day so you can continue on the tour!<br />
<br />
You can also see the post on my <a href="http://houseofchicandpenoche.blogspot.com/2012/12/christmas-house-tour-girls-room.html" target="_blank">daughters' Christmas room here</a>.<br />

I've been busy redecorating my daughters room. Here's the new bedding. More pics to come.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's what it looked like BEFORE:</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made all the bedding. The duvet and pillow sham I made from fabric from spoonflower.com The white coral pillows were made from Fabric.com The furry pillow was originally a square pillow from Target, which I altered into a lumbar pillow. The wall color is SW Shoji White. I am so tickled with how it turned out. </div>

She'll be able to look at this and know what settings to set the washer to when I ask her to throw in a load of clothes or take the wet ones from the washer. I'm going to print this out and stick it on the side of the washer. I left blanks so if you want to print it, you can fill in the names of your settings for your washer/dryer. I am smiling already and wondering why I haven't done this sooner:-)<br />

More decorating projects coming up soon as my kids go back to school and just my 2 year old will be home. My daughters room made the move from our home in Utah to were we are now. When she was 4 and now she's 8, and it's due is getting a makeover next!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's the BEFORE's where we just moved her room to our new house:</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and for now the "After" is in my head.:-) I must say my style has definitely changed for the better, can't wait to tear this room apart! Goodbye Green and Yellow! Fabric and paint have been selected!</div>Lauren -HCPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00574296273266222116noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1885410282448405779.post-54331842483356969892012-05-02T08:34:00.000-04:002012-05-02T08:34:00.753-04:00H's Laundry Room BoardI got to have some fun putting together a design for my friend Haley's laundry room. Though I'm usually busy being a full-time SAHM, putting my Interior Design degree to use is my absolute favorite thing! The starting point was the red washer and dryer she had previously purchased. After assessing her style, I designed a room with a modern country feel. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAF-_rN6rSXjKC6cjKVelHZkpHDCdychmePG01oyzCp9K2WAnyqLLXGRIOaqFKA6pSmDLe1_JY_bT7dei2X24KsaMVTaocA6Yi4hisfQ9h9PXzw7z99aPdhHmmNUV3Qxt6413v3SrMfUIb/s1600/Haley+Laundry+Room+privacy+blur.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAF-_rN6rSXjKC6cjKVelHZkpHDCdychmePG01oyzCp9K2WAnyqLLXGRIOaqFKA6pSmDLe1_JY_bT7dei2X24KsaMVTaocA6Yi4hisfQ9h9PXzw7z99aPdhHmmNUV3Qxt6413v3SrMfUIb/s640/Haley+Laundry+Room+privacy+blur.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the pattern I suggested for the hand painted wall treatment:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3dsVVOCMLSABnMYmJBsD12_7icigrNrjmCHMezcC0-OZWBuQTQ1qjymhNBOIHgy3TP7NOAet42D5Xcmdw4WBgWOWBlNRxiQ_31mrm4xA9v_lJPnhB8UB9b7eo_DrLXwZ-hWXL2KS1-EBB/s1600/pattern+for+sorensons.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3dsVVOCMLSABnMYmJBsD12_7icigrNrjmCHMezcC0-OZWBuQTQ1qjymhNBOIHgy3TP7NOAet42D5Xcmdw4WBgWOWBlNRxiQ_31mrm4xA9v_lJPnhB8UB9b7eo_DrLXwZ-hWXL2KS1-EBB/s320/pattern+for+sorensons.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also included more detailed elevations of each wall that I delivered along with the color board. I had so much fun working on this project-- Thanks Haley!</div>Lauren -HCPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00574296273266222116noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1885410282448405779.post-63453220319564495452012-04-25T14:51:00.000-04:002012-04-27T22:48:47.845-04:00Check Off the Bathroom Mirror Project!<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Step 2: Pick out a color and paint it before your husbee gets home and has an opinion.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0BpWmRuuBp3PIHjCvBG_JgVHO5jMw47F1-QxcWaKgxG67lNzYqDOvb9QVboiP48lkvFkGsB2VAkjdSaiByPyMNwpOmMeyNGpGmGSaDZ9g4ipgNOi1mRPtP54LwOzcHCbzQU_cUxuGGbit/s1600/_DSC1010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0BpWmRuuBp3PIHjCvBG_JgVHO5jMw47F1-QxcWaKgxG67lNzYqDOvb9QVboiP48lkvFkGsB2VAkjdSaiByPyMNwpOmMeyNGpGmGSaDZ9g4ipgNOi1mRPtP54LwOzcHCbzQU_cUxuGGbit/s400/_DSC1010.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You will see the top edges of the moulding in the mirror reflection of the inside of your frame, so you have to paint an inch or two of the backside.</div>
<br />

Step 3: Install it using 3m sticky velcro thingys right to the mirror.<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Step 4: Sit back and enjoy how you took that boring builder mirror to a bright sunshiny day!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I took my towel to the paint store and found a sample to match. (The color isn't showing up just right on the monitor, but in real life I assure you is the same as the towel.) If I remember correctly, I think the moulding was around $60 for this project, but you could definitely use smaller molding or make your own for less $.</div>

Inspired by my friend Emily, we each made a snowball pattern. I wish I would have kept track of how many hours this took. Let's just say it was a crazy amount. My SIL is due with a baby girl any day now-- so this is for her.<br />

Even though the front took more work, I almost like the back better cause I love the fabric. I can't believe JoAnns was discontinuing it. Luckily, I was able to bind it while listening to 8 hours of <a href="http://www.mormon.org/" target="_blank">General Conference</a> over the weekend. Now I can check that project off the list!Lauren -HCPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00574296273266222116noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1885410282448405779.post-86758103614976907692012-03-26T00:48:00.009-04:002012-03-26T00:48:00.088-04:00Drab to Fab My DIY Kitchen Makeover<div class="post-body" style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 0.75em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><div style="text-align: center;">I keep bumping into my kitchen island, which sometimes feels like an obstacle course to get around. I am reminded of my old kitchen that I loved, which wasn't huge, but well space planned. It had a great big peninsula, and makes me wish I could remodel my entire kitchen. (I love islands, but it is annoying to me in my particular floor plan.) I decided to revisit my old house's kitchen makeover and reminisce about making cookies on the 4' wide peninsula.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-decoration: none;">This kitchen desperately needed help, and we did it on a pretty small budget. The cabinets were OK, and new ones weren't in the budget, the old laminate counter top had lots of bubbles and cracks in it. I kept things pretty neutral since I knew we wouldn't be staying too long and wanted to make it buyer friendly. Enter granite tile, travertine trim for the edges, and tumbled travertine for the back splash, and a new light fixture for the dining area. After a lot of hard work, washing dishes in the bathroom, and eating a lot of take out, it was finally done.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #5588aa;"><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b>Tip #2</b>- <i>Update the towels!!!</i></span> Surprise, these pretty patterned towels are from Wallyworld!! Yes, you heard me right. (Even I get surprised sometimes!) They were part of the Better Homes and Garden collection and I love the pattern. I was almost going to splurge on some yellow ones from Anthro, and scored these wallet-friendly ones instead:-)</div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b>TIP #3</b>-<i><b> FAKE IT!</b></i></span> I used Bead Board Wallpaper instead of the real thing and that saved me a lot of $ and labor! It was super easy to install, and it looks as good as the real bead board on the back of my lockers. It was only $20/roll and I only used 1 and a half rolls (anyone need half a roll?:-))</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">

<b><br />
</b><br />
<b>TIP#5: Make Your Own Art! </b>I save a ton of quotes and things on my pinterest boards, and so I took a few of the sayings and put them together in photoshop, and printed them in colors that would coordinate with my room. It's easier than driving to TJ's HG's to search through all kinds of random artwork. I was able to this quickly and inexpensively with only a few mouse clicks and a trip to the costco photo center. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-R3nlRcD-hDYYwvvkz-kk-NEVKJkjFv1KGUzmynUs3w0heRI-d1ccNWUiCTdvLOegXKyfEmXERYot8sOLeytjjarmVdjyCYbk902ewS0dij8ym34nAxuh9LRD2kKRES5bV8VtszzPXe89/s1600/_DSC0848wm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-R3nlRcD-hDYYwvvkz-kk-NEVKJkjFv1KGUzmynUs3w0heRI-d1ccNWUiCTdvLOegXKyfEmXERYot8sOLeytjjarmVdjyCYbk902ewS0dij8ym34nAxuh9LRD2kKRES5bV8VtszzPXe89/s640/_DSC0848wm.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
That being said, I did buy the canvas over the throne at HG's (which I still love to shop at). But I still had 3 other walls to fill and I didn't want more of the same printed generic florals on each one. I will be framing my sayings as soon as I can get to IKEA for some cheap 11x14 frames.<br />
<br />
The only thing left is this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhela9pu3-7cmvUTTpwzFjzYBVLwmBAkXk-Y2Gcr7vN9DqwajfowBKDn64I3pCsEmL8kY83wZrJgkUZsfnaTDCS822N21LmBDd8wUVeTniZm9C1wW1cAYn_rVG1kJEXQQrTPD8qmW1ylz_S/s1600/IMG_6008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhela9pu3-7cmvUTTpwzFjzYBVLwmBAkXk-Y2Gcr7vN9DqwajfowBKDn64I3pCsEmL8kY83wZrJgkUZsfnaTDCS822N21LmBDd8wUVeTniZm9C1wW1cAYn_rVG1kJEXQQrTPD8qmW1ylz_S/s320/IMG_6008.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I taped off horizontal boxes first, then vertical boxes to decide which shape I wanted to do. Usually I like the look of horizontal boxes. However, I did a higher chair rail and so the vertical boxes looked better proportionally. I think they were about 24h x 22w, we just did the math to find out how many would equally fit on the wall.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">After:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigaNJgzs2p_caL5w7NjffTuNF2b7pDSbAaCuZGptBkr9Obu3hRhDDninlpTlBcsnbTDOEe6PKR0dKcc2oRIprO9AMqE5jepD9WmNGPquFsSEvBeeppwsAWRMx-CdV1cYC48PXzkPYijrOJ/s1600/DSCN0302.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigaNJgzs2p_caL5w7NjffTuNF2b7pDSbAaCuZGptBkr9Obu3hRhDDninlpTlBcsnbTDOEe6PKR0dKcc2oRIprO9AMqE5jepD9WmNGPquFsSEvBeeppwsAWRMx-CdV1cYC48PXzkPYijrOJ/s400/DSCN0302.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>First we cut all the boxes and then used wood glue and clamped them together. Then I took each box out to the garage and spray primed each one a couple of times. Once they were primed we tacked them to the wall with our nail gun. <br />
<br />
This is what the room looked like for a few months....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N-Gc4G-bvXE/T1425qgbxHI/AAAAAAAAB_o/PUaowqcvmAU/s1600/IMG_6133.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N-Gc4G-bvXE/T1425qgbxHI/AAAAAAAAB_o/PUaowqcvmAU/s320/IMG_6133.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">(1 coat of primer on the walls)</div><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">Then I finally got my rear in gear with the help of my awesome step-dad, and when he's around, things get done:-) (and thanks mom for watching the kids too:-))</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt6W-A-jE4LeYI4fudx7PFwmlOXhUEqLsEkZ4VWq8xSZ5O-zSfmJuvBMl3xje47z-igEqWGk2qdUrF5_z3DssNd1iQJsFcLnhijVrtbMTTBJg3TeJqVu19DLi12QB_-kH0bFjnW_eLyhz_/s1600/_DSC0242.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt6W-A-jE4LeYI4fudx7PFwmlOXhUEqLsEkZ4VWq8xSZ5O-zSfmJuvBMl3xje47z-igEqWGk2qdUrF5_z3DssNd1iQJsFcLnhijVrtbMTTBJg3TeJqVu19DLi12QB_-kH0bFjnW_eLyhz_/s320/_DSC0242.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The window we framed out earlier, light fixture needs replacing, not crooked in real life. This is a good shot of the builder blinds, see how I transformed them into <a href="http://houseofchicandpenoche.blogspot.com/2012/03/roman-shades-from-big-blinds.html" target="_blank">cute roman shades here.</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

I would normally recommend a satin finish for trim, but I decided to go full on glossy finish since eventually this is going to be a more modern room, (even with the traditional box moldings) I love it. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkmWSCWiUZYLgAiKvHyrzYkpv8au1qulHoskWfq9gGL-Q3brCFqfXctm-XgUE_0ssXYrN4rorMWnPWIocxe7Hgk5k2YeXbAEDMpCtco4gODdwf4BVaneZ5UGTXZkkpo8njcOFL549Clp8B/s1600/DSCN0306.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkmWSCWiUZYLgAiKvHyrzYkpv8au1qulHoskWfq9gGL-Q3brCFqfXctm-XgUE_0ssXYrN4rorMWnPWIocxe7Hgk5k2YeXbAEDMpCtco4gODdwf4BVaneZ5UGTXZkkpo8njcOFL549Clp8B/s320/DSCN0306.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So now that the moldings are done and the roman shades are in, the next phase of the plan is painting the walls and putting together some art I got for the walls and some new fabric ordered. When I'm done there will be no more red in this room. My dining room transformation is moving a long. My latest project was making these roman shades using my blinds. I have to admit, when I first started cutting the strings for this I was worried!! Once you start there is no turning back. I felt the pressure of getting it done before my husband came home and saw everything dismantled:)<br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;">****Edited to add: The fabric I used was</span> <a href="http://lsfabrics.com/fabric/windsor-1" target="_blank">Windsor from Lewis and Sheron Textiles</a>.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's the window BEFORE: excuse the crummy pic of the ghetto room!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjp_JZPBvvHMMT6Til3zSscfppz5IQIWdgACDS-Nr-l0M0-dG6Io_fVYh-DjTrn-eMa9msusksTpPbH5CLQ6ARjuggUFQDC9ODEuDpc0uDswou_5qcqbNGMkRTisyrAXJxjTvovHNRos_x/s1600/_DSC0790d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjp_JZPBvvHMMT6Til3zSscfppz5IQIWdgACDS-Nr-l0M0-dG6Io_fVYh-DjTrn-eMa9msusksTpPbH5CLQ6ARjuggUFQDC9ODEuDpc0uDswou_5qcqbNGMkRTisyrAXJxjTvovHNRos_x/s640/_DSC0790d.jpg" width="376" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
I followed this <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2009/02/make-shades-out-of-mini-blinds.html" target="_blank">tutorial</a> for shades our of mini blinds, but used my larger blinds.<br />
<br />
First I removed my blinds from the window. I cut all the little slits and took off the bottom, and removed the extra slats that I didn't need. (leaving intact the pull string--don't cut that one!)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_PrGX-rlH6wFYtUOcQycyu1yXZeT5eVy_vtL689CkJ3U6AvOK3vsfKkn7fNj1szdPUb1pTT8k4azsbF9H6Ak7-zh9XUHuymBpYuBg948ETwg1E6_kv8exomyjvk0ZKPKH1DWPVm0UENhF/s1600/IMG_6888.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_PrGX-rlH6wFYtUOcQycyu1yXZeT5eVy_vtL689CkJ3U6AvOK3vsfKkn7fNj1szdPUb1pTT8k4azsbF9H6Ak7-zh9XUHuymBpYuBg948ETwg1E6_kv8exomyjvk0ZKPKH1DWPVm0UENhF/s640/IMG_6888.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Second, I rethreaded the slats that I needed. I put one about every 8-9 inches.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I lined up my fabric, left 3" on each side of the slats, then glued each slat down on the fabric with a little bead of FabriTac glue from Micheals. Then I folded the edges over and glued them onto the slats.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB032IdbgHKpWAcT9km4TGnLbnIWIPqnLUcjYPAHkTu5z6o0rB8tQVP_4YzTF_yQFX3Z-BU9UzM2d1-3uy0VLae5_BwB9rZAseClL2Fvj507c3ueNLL01SWWsbOdi9W2jpjKl-M11JZRd2/s1600/IMG_6890.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB032IdbgHKpWAcT9km4TGnLbnIWIPqnLUcjYPAHkTu5z6o0rB8tQVP_4YzTF_yQFX3Z-BU9UzM2d1-3uy0VLae5_BwB9rZAseClL2Fvj507c3ueNLL01SWWsbOdi9W2jpjKl-M11JZRd2/s640/IMG_6890.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After I put it up on the window, I decided to add some lining to the shade.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So I cut out lining pieces and glued the rectangles onto the fabric in between the slats. It would be better to do this first, before you glued any slats on. Oh well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also left about 6 inches on the bottom of the shade, and then I just hemmed it by folding it over and gluing it into place. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I hung it back up into the existing hardware. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Drumroll please....!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_CLD2GWeoy7sHINkNjxugb7bYr8RPcDTJoGie8L-pyeGOuHvHQbKcr9n-RARJWT9nN2eT9cYwb2JYTRmf5oxMVYYOmjbcOmA6rki38GxaiyZ1ARXYLKFdXVVsiRCEw2OOmnXne2YdLjYQ/s1600/dining+room_DSC0794wm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_CLD2GWeoy7sHINkNjxugb7bYr8RPcDTJoGie8L-pyeGOuHvHQbKcr9n-RARJWT9nN2eT9cYwb2JYTRmf5oxMVYYOmjbcOmA6rki38GxaiyZ1ARXYLKFdXVVsiRCEw2OOmnXne2YdLjYQ/s640/dining+room_DSC0794wm.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">(please ignore the wall color--that will be attacked shortly:))</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: xx-small;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Woila!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br />
</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And it goes up and down just like the blinds did. I love it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Thanks for stopping by!</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br />
</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Update: </i> On my second shade I glued the slats to the lining first, and then laid that on top of my fabric and glued the lining to the fabric in the same place the slats were laying. I think it turned out even nicer:-)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I purchased 4" foam (with my 40% off coupon), which I cut into the T-Shape so it would fit snuggly in the seat and extend slightly longer than the corners (to assist with the head bumping that goes on when the kids get their shoes). I borrowed my neighbors electric knife to cut it easily and straight (Thanks Laura:-)).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<div style="text-align: center;"> The fabric is a Waverly print I got in the home dec section of JoAnns. I was surprised to find a fun modern print in such a great tangerine color. I found this <a href="http://iambaker.net/" target="_blank">cute rosette cake tutorial</a> and wanted to try it out. The pink rose cake I made for my 2 year old sons's b-day (yes, it's pink, and he's 2 and doesn't care what color it is:-- next year he'll get a boy cake). </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr5IPI-f3kPuDn9Eog9RfJYMstfCAlcM_FF6PUeOWrVxZiqaGxad-x-qkLHkLKr5hGAtRF6WKg3IP2UoeNzs_pxSjHiWXeWH0hLV6x-9-v1xcYwEz9U9TKNXptU2Vo1cTLycYDm6epCmNs/s1600/_DSC0125+wm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr5IPI-f3kPuDn9Eog9RfJYMstfCAlcM_FF6PUeOWrVxZiqaGxad-x-qkLHkLKr5hGAtRF6WKg3IP2UoeNzs_pxSjHiWXeWH0hLV6x-9-v1xcYwEz9U9TKNXptU2Vo1cTLycYDm6epCmNs/s640/_DSC0125+wm.jpg" width="424" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">The 2nd cake was one I made for our <a href="http://www.mormon.org/" target="_blank">church's</a> "Great to be 8" night, which was a special program for all the kids turning 8 and getting baptized this year. It uses up a bunch of frosting, but is super easy! It only requires a 1M tip (it's a very large star shape) and you make circles with it. You can find the cake tutorial and the crusting buttercream recipe<a href="http://iambaker.net/" target="_blank"> here.</a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Gm76q8dqDEO-nNixsfjhN9x5m6TsGEbFDdCFBOg0rZJyZg1W-uN8zBrIH2bjTNdbR2FbARqPi8T8Iiqkh3FxC19JemRQ8gmhT_Ct9-TMb-13X0ncBtDvOqI3_W3kAq6Q4BrX5rT4CdYB/s1600/_DSC0344wm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Gm76q8dqDEO-nNixsfjhN9x5m6TsGEbFDdCFBOg0rZJyZg1W-uN8zBrIH2bjTNdbR2FbARqPi8T8Iiqkh3FxC19JemRQ8gmhT_Ct9-TMb-13X0ncBtDvOqI3_W3kAq6Q4BrX5rT4CdYB/s640/_DSC0344wm.jpg" width="496" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I made four 9" cakes and then carved a smaller circle out of 2 to make the top circle smaller (I realized later I should have just used my 6" pans for that, ah vell)</div><div style="text-align: center;">Now I have to make another birthday cake for my daughter who is turning 8 in less than 2 weeks...
